If It Bleeds Review

Author: Stephen King
Pages: 447
Star Rating: ✪✪✪✪

A collection of four uniquely wonderful long stories, including a stand-alone sequel to the No. 1 bestseller THE OUTSIDER. News people have a saying: ‘If it bleeds, it leads’. And a bomb at Albert Macready Middle School is guaranteed to lead any bulletin. Holly Gibney of the Finders Keepers detective agency is working on the case of a missing dog – and on her own need to be more assertive – when she sees the footage on TV. But when she tunes in again, to the late-night report, she realises there is something not quite right about the correspondent who was first on the scene. So begins ‘If It Bleeds’, a stand-alone sequel to the No. 1 bestselling THE OUTSIDER featuring the incomparable Holly on her first solo case – and also the riveting title story in Stephen King’s brilliant new collection. Dancing alongside are three more wonderful long stories from this ‘formidably versatile author’ (The Sunday Times) – ‘Mr Harrigan’s Phone’, ‘The Life of Chuck’ and ‘Rat’. All four display the richness of King’s storytelling with grace, humour, horror and breathtaking suspense. A fascinating Author’s Note gives us a wonderful insight into the origin of each story and the writer’s unparalleled imagination

My thoughts

I really enjoyed this book and thought the stories where good. I have a strange relationship with Stephen King books, I either love them and finish them really quickly or I take forever to get through them as they don’t grab me.
I bought this because of the short story for The Outsider.

Mr Harrigan’s Phone – This one was good and I thought a solid start to keep me gripped and wanting to read the other stories. It was about a lovely relationship between an older man and a younger boy, where both of them teach each other about life from their perspectives. I would of liked a little more in this one because of the relationship between them both.

The Life of Chuck – If I am being honest about this one it isn’t one I remember much about. From what I can remember it was about the world slowly dying. I would need a re-read of this one. I do remember finding it story which was thought-provoking but not one which sticks around.

If it bleeds – This is the reason I bought this book and I actually really enjoyed this. Holly Gibney is a character from the Mr Mercedes trilogy which is not something I have read but after reading this, it is now on my radar. I thought this was an interesting plot and a lot longer than the other short stories in this collections.

Rat – This one was my least favourite out of the entire book. It is about an author who is good at writing short stories but can not finish a full novel. It is his journey to finally writing his first full length novel. I didn’t really find it that interesting and found myself skim reading it towards the end. Overall I would recommend this book to people and I will definitely be picking up the Mr Mercedes trilogy in the future.
